Captain Carrot House Ad?

A fan of the blog recently drew my attention to this Captain Carrot house ad that he discovered over on fourcolorpromises.com Does anybody know where this ad was originally featured? Maybe Scott Shaw! knows?

I know I've seen a variant somewhere in some old DC comic I have kicking around, but the thing that has me wondering about this one is the Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew title logo is completely different from the final version that they actually used on the series. For one thing, Captain Carrot is spelled out in CARROTS!!!

Whoa...so trippy.

Any help would be fantastic.

Keep on crewzin', people!

  1. I know this was in most of the comics at about the time the series made its debut....I'll go check out my comics from that era. I didn't keep most of them, though...!

  2. I know I've seen the ad before, but not with the altered logo. I'm wondering if maybe somebody photoshopped the above logo recently?

  3. Any DC collectors out there who have collections large enough to guarantee knowing for sure if the ad saw print might also find the task of wading through those large collections to find it (or confirm its absence) rather daunting. In the spirit of civic duty, here's a checklist of the DC issues most likely to contain the ad. To my knowledge, this is everything carrying a cover date of January, February or March 1982 (the month of CCATAZC #1 and the two months prior). It might also have appeared later with the on sale date removed.

First of all, there were two series in digest format: THE BEST OF DC #20- 22 and DC SPECIAL BLUE RIBBON DIGEST #17- 19. The ad as pictured looks like standard comic dimensions, but it could easily have been altered for the digest books. There are also numerous titles introduced after the March cover dates that I haven't bothered to include.

    ACTION COMICS #527- 529
ADVENTURE COMICS #489- 490 (no March issue)
    ALL-STAR SQUADRON #5- 7
ARAK, SON OF THUNDER #5- 7
    BATMAN #343- 345
THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #182- 184
    DC COMICS PRESENTS #41- 43
    DETECTIVE COMICS #510- 512
    THE FLASH #305- 307
    GHOSTS #108- 110
    G. I. COMBAT #237- 239
    GREEN LANTERN #148- 150
    HOUSE OF MYSTERY #300- 302
    JONAH HEX #56- 58
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #198- 200
    THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #283- 285
THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY #25-27
THE NEW TEEN TITANS #15- 17
    THE PHANTOM ZONE [LS]#1- 3
SECRETS OF HAUNTED HOUSE #44- 46
    SGT. ROCK #360- 362
    SUPERMAN 367- 369
    THE SUPERMAN FAMILY #214- 216
    THE UNEXPECTED #218- 220
    UNKNOWN SOLDIER #259- 261
    WARLORD #53- 55
    WEIRD WAR TALES #107- 109
    WONDER WOMAN #287- 289
    WORLD'S FINEST COMICS #275- 277

I'm not a huge DC fan, but I've got maybe 20% of these; let's all check a few. I'll start with New Teen Titans-- it's not in any of them. Counting the digests, that's three down and 89 to go!

  4. [I just published this at the original post on this site, but thought it might be more appropriate to share it here]:

I was a huge Captain Carrot fan at the time, and I have a print copy of that ad! Somewhere. (And NOW I feel compelled to find it). I was 8 or 9 at the time, so I don't remember all the details, but the ad I have is loose, and was pulled from a comic (maybe a Legion book? (--what was I thinking?)). It is printed on heavier stock than comic pages of the time-- like a glossy magazine page, but was an interior page (i.e. not a front or back cover) to the best of my memory. (Dang, now where did I put that thing...)

  5. I'll also add that the copy I have DOES, in fact, use the title logo with this different, 'carrot based' font. I remember thinking at the time how weird & exotic it was! :)

  6. It was in all or most of the DC issues cover-dated February, 1982, I believe. I did confirm that it was in DC Comics Presents #42, which was dated February, 1982.

  7. It was the inside back cover in THE BEST OF DC #21 and DC SPECIAL BLUE RIBBON DIGEST #18
The color comics all featured the correct logo and font
